The DW Soundworks can be played from a USB-MIDI keyboard or a pad controller. This article explains how.
- Make sure your MIDI keyboard or pad controller has a USB connector that can transmit MIDI data.
-
Install Controller Driver.
Determine the make and model of your MIDI controller. Visit the manufacturer's website and locate the appropriate driver for your controller. Download and install the driver following the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the driver is compatible with your computer's platform (Mac or Windows) and operating system. -
Connect a standard USB cable from the MIDI controller to your computer.
*Do not use a USB cable that is designed only for charging a device. Charge-only cables cannot transmit data.
*If using a USB hub, ensure it is powered and capable of transmitting data (refer to manufacturer's instructions). - Power On Controller and Launch DW Soundworks.
-
Configure MIDI Device in DW Soundworks.
In DW Soundworks, go to Settings (Soundworks > Settings), in the Hardware Settings window, select your MIDI controller from the MIDI Device drop-down menu. Then, click "Apply" to confirm the selection.
*If you're using DW Soundworks as a plug-in within a DAW, you may need to configure your controller as a MIDI device in your DAW's preferences/settings. -
Ensure that the MIDI transmit channel of your MIDI controller matches the MIDI channel in DW Soundworks.
*The default MIDI channel in DW Soundworks is often 10, though you can set it to any of the 16 available MIDI channels.
*If your controller has its internal sounds, consider setting MIDI Local Control to off in your controller's settings to prevent double triggering of sounds. -
Play the MIDI keyboard or pad controller keys/pads.
Each key or pad should trigger a specific drum kit instrument. For instance, pressing MIDI note number 36 (C key 2 octaves below middle C) could trigger a bass drum sound. If necessary, adjust MIDI note numbers on specific pads to trigger the desired sounds in DW Soundworks.
